This past Friday, OSEEC (Ocean State Environmental Education Collaborative), hosted a holiday party for the children and teens at the South Providence Neighborhood Ministries. The mission of SPNM is to bring hope and find hope for the community of South Providence through direct services and youth programs. The Direct Services programs include Community Outreach and their Food Pantry. The food pantry services over 500 families on a weekly basis, and is the second largest food pantry in the state of Rhode Island. The Louie’s Place youth program is a year round after-school and extended learning program for at-risk youth ages 5-18. The programs offered at Louie’s Place focus on leadership development, academic excellence, college and career exploration, “ReThink It” Conflict Resolution Initiatives and a full-day summer program, which includes job training for youth.
The 16 corps members in OSEEC came together to plan a holiday celebration for the youth at SPNM and it was a hit! Each site had a specific portion of the party to plan for: decorations, games, crafts, or cookies. The party lasted for two and a half hours and SPNM youth got to participate in holiday themed games, create crafts, and decorate their own gingerbread/sugar cookies! There were 37 kids and 6 teen counselors who attended the event. Everyone involved had a blast and it was a very rewarding way to spend a Friday by giving back to these highly-deserving kids and teens 🙂
