On April 20th, OSEEC partnered with Serve Rhode Island for the 6th annual Roger Williams Park Cleanup. This cleanup event was one of many taking place during the Providence Earth Day 2013 Spring Cleaning throughout April. The Ocean State Environmental Education Collaborative has been leading this large scale cleanup event in the 427-acre city park with Serve RI since 2009.
This year, nearly 200 volunteers including many other AmeriCorps sites from around Rhode Island came to cleanup the major ponds and waterways around Roger Williams Park. OSEEC members led smaller groups around the park and used various tools to collect trash and debris from the waterways and the bordering areas. Over the course of the morning, volunteers managed to collect thousands of pounds of trash from the park grounds. Common trash items found included plastics, glass bottles, cigarette butts, and paper products. Some larger items found included bike frames, tires, and dead snapping turtles. It was a very successful day at Roger Williams Park helping to beautify the area and make it a safer environment for both animals and visitors!
