We hope the start of your service year has been going phenomenal and getting better each day. We wanted to take a moment to introduce you to the 2013-2014 College Advising Corps. This program places 12 recent college graduates in 11 high schools and the Community College of Rhode Island to increase the number of students who attend and graduate from college.
Here are our College Advisors!
Juan Carlos Carranza is originally from San Diego, California and attended Brown University, which he graduated from in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He is currently in his second year with the National College Advising Corps, serving at Central High School in Providence, RI.
Benjamin Gudorf is a first-year member of the CAC and is currently at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), Liston Campus in Providence. He moved to Providence from his home state Ohio in 2012 after earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry with a minor in physics from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Born and bred in Rhode Island, Karina Evora is in her second year of service with the Brown University chapter of the National College Advising Corps. She was born and raised in the city of Pawtucket, just outside of the state capital of Providence. After graduating from the University of Miami in 2012, she returned to Pawtucket, RI to serve at Shea High school, from which she graduated from in 2008.
Originally from New Jersey, Angela Hui is looking forward to another rewarding year working with students as a second-year College Advisor at the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex in Providence, RI. Angela attended Wellesley College, and graduated in May 2012 with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Philosophy.
Andrea McWilliams was born and raised in the border city of El Paso, TX. In 2012, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Brown University. At the start of her undergraduate career, Andrea became passionate about social justice issues. She is currently a second-year college guide at West Warwick High School located in West Warwick, RI.
Thuy-Mai Nguyen was born and raised Phoenix, Arizona but trekked across the country to attend and adventure Brown University. During her senior year at Brown, Thuy-Mai served as an Access Scholar with the NCAC program, so it is with great pleasure that she returns as a College Guide at Tolman Senior High School in Pawtucket, RI.
Nicole Moniz is a College Guide whose hometown is very near to Providence. She is from the neighboring city, Pawtucket or what many people living in the areas surrounding it know as “Da bucket.” Nicole graduated from Providence College in May with two Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and Women Studies. Nicole will spend her first year after graduating as a College Guide at Rogers High School in Newport, RI.
Julio Reyes is returning for his second year as a College Advisor at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School in Providence. Julio was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up dividing his time between Miami, Florida and El Paso, Texas. Julio graduated second in his class from El Dorado High School where he participated in the high school band and student government.
Donnie Taveras, a native of Providence, RI, graduated from Rhode Island College with a degree in Communications and a concentration in Public Relations in 2012. He is now in his second year working at Hope High School as a College Guide.
Aiyah Josiah-Faeduwor hails from the historically rich Boston, Massachusetts where he attended John D. O’bryant High School of Math and Science. With the fortunate aid of BottomLine, a college access program similar to College Visions, he applied and was accepted to Brown University. He is now serving at Mount Pleasant High School.
Natasha Rodriguez was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. She graduated in May of 2013 from Providence College. Natasha is placed for her first year as a College Guide at Woonsocket High School in Woonsocket, RI, and is thrilled to make a change in the community.
When Tieisha Tift was offered the opportunity to serve as a first-year College Adviser at E-Cubed Academy in Providence, she couldn’t believe her good fortune! Born, raised, and educated in Trenton, NJ for most of her life, she developed a low tolerance for educational and racial inequities and the concomitant social consequences at an early age.
