Sorry this post is coming late, but here is our update for MLK day at the Institute for Nonviolence. We had the first mayoral and gubernatorial candidate forum at the Institute. Candidates were asked to address issues of violence and violence prevention in our city and state as well as nonviolence education in our schools. The event was very well attended, we maxed out the chapel and had to open up other seating areas in the building. The event was very successful.
AmeriCorps members helped set-up for the event and greeted and guided guests to the event. One big goal of the institute has been to influence policy and policymakers and be involved in local politics. Hosting this event was the first step in this direction and it was amazing to see local politicians talking about nonviolence education (something that is rarely seen in political forums).
